Mae Boua Ngeun

History: Mae Boua Ngeun, born in 2015 in Thongmixay District, Sayaboury Province, is half wild and half captive, with a wild father and a captive mother. She arrived at the Elephant Conservation Center (ECC) at just two months old with her mother, Mae Kham, to be raised in a safe environment. Energetic and playful, Mae Boua Ngeun enjoys the company of other elephants, especially Mae Boun Nam and the juvenile males, especially Suriya, with whom she can play for hours.

Her rescue and subsequent integration into ECC were made possible through a successful fundraising campaign. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of donors, $90,000 was raised by April 30, 2024, which facilitated the official transfer of ownership to ECC on May 8, 2024. This campaign, in partnership with Sun Bear Outreach non-profit, ensured Mae Boua Ngeun’s continued life at ECC, free from exploitation.

Mae Boua Ngeun’s daily life involves positive reinforcement training by her mahout, which is essential for her well-being. This training allows for gentle health checks, such as opening her mouth for dental inspections, presenting her feet for foot care, and enjoying skin care with a brush. These activities not only maintain her health but also strengthen the bond between her and her mahout, making the training sessions enjoyable and fostering a trusting relationship.
