Back to the Wild

Three days at the Center, then off-grid into Nam Pouy National Park – tracking wild-elephant habitat, camera traps, camping under the canopy in one of the lesser known protected forest of Laos.
An eight-day expedition for travellers who want their journey to support real elephant protection. Three days at ECC introduce our welfare and rewilding approach, then you head off-grid into the 192,000-hectare Nam Pouy National Protected Area, home to Laos' second-largest wild elephant population. Trek with the monitoring team, assist with non-invasive health checks, deploy camera traps and camp under the canopy.

Day by Day
Eight days, from the lake to the forest and back. Small groups, adaptive itinerary.
Days 1–3
At the Center. Exploration: foundations of rewilding
Travel from Luang Prabang to ECC in Sayaboury, your base for three days of preparation. Guided walks and talks introduce elephant behaviour, positive-reinforcement training, social enrichment and the role of veterinary care in rehabilitation, along with the tracking tools and data used to monitor released animals.
Evenings bring briefings, Q&A and a look at maps of the Nam Pouy landscape. On the afternoon of day 3, you receive a mission briefing and help prepare vehicles and equipment.
Overnight: Lakeside Premium Bungalow at the Center
Day 4
Overland to Thongmixay: into elephant country
Leave ECC early and travel south-west across Sayaboury Province towards Thongmixay, with interpretive stops along the way. A midday trek in the Ban Phonesavath protected area gives a first taste of the region's forests and of moving quietly through elephant habitat.
In the afternoon, continue past two known wild-elephant zones near Paklay to a third in Thongmixay. Dinner with mahouts brings conservation science together with the traditions of the people who live alongside elephants.
Overnight: Simple local guesthouse, Thongmixay
Day 5
Nam Pouy: first checks & forest camp
After a sacred forest stupa, enter the Nam Pouy National Protected Area. With ECC's vet and monitoring staff, take part in a scheduled non-invasive elephant health check – a chance to see protocols that minimise stress while gathering data essential to welfare and rewilding.
After a riverside picnic, trek deeper into Huay Sa Hom to deploy camera traps at pre-selected spots. By late afternoon, set up a low-impact forest camp. Dinner is cooked over simple stoves, to the sound of cicadas, frogs and bamboo.
Overnight: Forest camp, Nam Pouy
Day 6
Monitoring circuit: traps & lookouts
Rise at dawn for a field breakfast and a monitoring circuit, looking for fresh tracks, dung and feeding signs that reveal herd movements. After a shaded lunch, hike to retrieve memory cards from your camera traps and stop at viewpoints to discuss how topography, water and seasonal food shape elephant routes.
Back in Thongmixay by late afternoon for a well-earned shower. Dinner is hosted by a traditional mahout family, who share stories of a life intertwined with elephants.
Overnight: Local guesthouse, Thongmixay
Day 7
Community & culture: school visit & back to ECC
Visit a local school with ECC staff to support environmental education, sharing age-appropriate materials and building pride in local wildlife and protected areas.
After lunch, begin the overland return towards Sayaboury, pausing at cultural and natural landmarks. Arrive at ECC by evening for a final dinner with the team.
Overnight: ECC in Sayaboury
Day 8

A slow morning at the Center – last questions, photo sharing or a walk by the lake – before the early-afternoon transfer back to Luang Prabang, one of Southeast Asia's least-visited protected forests behind you.
