—Elephant Conservation Center — Sayaboury, Laos

Exploration

3 days / 2 nights

A three-day immersion with more forest time, rare access to male elephants, and a fuller picture of the science behind their protection.

A three-day immersion into the world of the Asian elephant on Nam Tien Lake. Beyond the Discovery programme, you follow a full "positive reinforcement" training session and vet check, then trek to meet our free-roaming male elephants – the only such experience in Laos. Expert-led, hands-off, and entirely at the elephants' pace.

Highlights

  • Walk with the herd, watch two bath times and the Socialisation Area
  • Visit Laos' only elephant hospital and meet the vet team
  • Follow a positive-reinforcement training session and vet check from a safe distance
  • Trek to observe free-roaming bull elephants – the only male socialisation programme in Laos
  • Learn at the Information Center: biology, ecology and the elephant in Asian culture
  • Two lakeside evenings: Delicious Lao food, conservation talks, kayaks and sunset viewpoints

Day by Day

Three days, two nights. Long enough to dive into the herd's routines.

01

Day 1

Arrival & first encounter

Minivan from Luang Prabang, then a boat across Nam Tien Lake to the Center. After settling in, walk the forest past the enclosures where our main activities take place, followed by a family-style Lao lunch on a lakeside platform.

In the afternoon you watch bath time at the nursery, home to our youngest elephants and their mothers, then visit the hospital, where our Lao vet team or biologist explains injuries and treatments. Evening: free time for viewpoints, canoe or kayak, a 6:00 pm film and Q&A with our specialists, then dinner and the bar.

Overnight: Accommodation – Classic, Premium, Forest House or Deluxe

02

Day 2

A full day with the herd

Meet the elephants in the forest and walk with them to another bath. Then visit the Socialisation Area, where the herd interacts freely and a new group is forming – observe from the raised platforms and learn how their social dynamics work.

After lunch, watch the afternoon bath, then follow our mahouts and vets as they run a target-training session. Every elephant is trained with positive reinforcement, so treatments and routine checks are low-stress. Dinner at the Center.

Overnight: Accommodation – Classic, Premium, Forest House or Deluxe

03

Day 3

Free-roaming males & departure

Follow your guide on a trek to observe our free-roaming male elephants. ECC is the only facility in Laos caring for and socialising bulls, which are rarely shown in tourist camps. Learn what makes them different and how the male socialisation programme is progressing.

Back at the Center, the Information Center brings together displays on elephant biology, social life, ecology and cultural significance – and on why elephants are a keystone species. After lunch, the minivan returns you to Luang Prabang, around 5:30 pm.
